Newman takes position with Atlanta firm

The Circuit Court judge who left the bench after presiding over Alex Murdaugh’s murder trial has come out of retirement to take a position with the self-described “world’s largest private alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provider.”

Clifton B. Newman brings more than 23 years of experience on the bench to his new position with the Atlanta office of JAMS, a company news release says. In addition to the Murdaugh trial, which saw the renowned-to-reviled, now-disbarred lawyer convicted of murdering his wife and one of their sons, Newman presided over numerous high-profile civil and criminal cases, including complex litigation and government liability cases.

JAMS has 29 locations and more than 400 panelists, its website says, including “distinguished retired judges, former attorneys and other ADR professionals with expertise and experience covering dozens of industries and areas of law.” It offers solutions for every stage of conflict, including mediation and arbitration, annually resolving thousands of business and legal disputes.

In addition to his long service as a judge, Newman also practice law in a firm he formed in Cleveland served as an assistant solicitor for Williamsburg County for more than 16 years before he was elected to the Circuit Court in 2000, the release says.
