AT A GLANCE

  • Joe Rice has built a reputation as the lawyer behind some of the larger civil cases in the United States.
  • One of his governing legal principles is “go big and be bold.”

Joe Rice has led some of the larger civil legal actions of the last 30 years, including those stemming from the opioid crisis ($51 billion in settlements), the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill ($7.8 billion to $18 billion) and the Volkswagen’s diesel emissions scandal ($15 billion, the largest auto-related consumer class-action settlement in U.S. history). In this video, he discusses an axiom that governs his work in them: “Go big and be bold.”

  • “When you’re doing litigation, when you talk about go big and be bold, I look at it as take on causes that make a difference or that are gonna make a difference.”
  • “So when I talk about going big it is cases — or ‘causes’ we call them, versus ‘cases’ — that make a difference, and if we’re successful, we change lives for the better of a lot of people.”
  • “To go bold means forceful, means committed, and once you start, you don’t stop until you prevail.”
